Ikurangi Eco Retreat

Award winning Ikurangi Eco Retreat is the Cook Islands first purpose-built eco accommodation and glamping hotel created to give visitors to Rarotonga the option of a getaway that doesn’t compromise the environment. Set amongst organic tropical gardens and local plantations with dramatic mountain views, get back to nature and indulge in a luxurious eco escape like no other.

All guests enjoy a complimentary daily tropical breakfast delivered to your room featuring the organic fruit abundant on our property. Expect chia seed pudding with cacao nibs, bircher and island smoothie, croissants with smashed avocado – just to name a few. Locally roasted coffee and tea facilities are available in your room at all times. For a night in, we recommend our sumptuous grazing platters prepared and delivered by our private chef featuring a selection of local delicacies.

Also included is free bicycle hire to explore the island. Day and night markets, shops and dining options are only a short cycle away. Rarotonga offers an impressive range of cafés and restaurants and we’ll happily share some of our favourites with you. Onsite reception and tour desk is open 7 days with friendly local advice on all the island has to offer.

Nestled in a tropical garden under the stunning vista of the Takitumu mountains on the north-east side of Rarotonga, we have chosen this location for its natural beauty and serenity. Being set back from the lagoon ensures our retreat and guests have a minimal impact on our marine environment.

Ikurangi offers guests the choice of a fully furnished Luxury Safari Tent with outdoor “jungle” ensuite or a traditional Tropical Are (Polynesian style studio) with private deck. An intimate boutique resort, our four Safari Tents and three Are have been strategically placed to ensure each room enjoys privacy and views of our pristine environment. NB: adults only 12+.

Centrally located, we are 400m from the ocean reef, 5km from the main township of Avarua and 4km in the opposite direction from world-famous Muri and the best swimming beaches in Rarotonga.

Accommodation & Amenities

All accommodation is equipped with a super-king bed (or twin singles upon request), fully screened windows, eco-luxe toiletries, waffle robes and a yoga mat. Each room has a pedestal fan, bar fridge, hairdryer and safe for your valuables. Our Luxury Safari Tents feature an ensuite with modern composting toilet and private open-air hot water shower.

Tropical Are

“Are” is the word for home in the Cook Islands. Styled with true Polynesia in mind with cooling high ceilings and woven materials, our Tropical Are (Polynesian style studio room) command relaxation. Each Are boasts a private deck facing the stunning mountains of Takitumu, and overlooking a traditional pawpaw plantation. Relax on the indoor daybed while you enjoy a cup of Cook Islands artisan coffee or a cooling local craft brew beer.

Luxury Safari Tent

Our Luxury Safari Tents are perched upon private timber decks with outdoor lounge furniture overlooking the Ikurangi site, perfect for a sundowner or getting into a good book. With views of the Takitumu mountain ranges and private outdoor showers, you really can appreciate the natural beauty of our island. Each tent is equipped with hotel comforts such as power points for charging electronics, hairdryers, hot water, tea and coffee making facilities and a bar fridge.

Ariki Safari Tent

Our most exclusive room, perfect for the bride and groom, honeymoon couples, or those wanting something a little extra special. Enjoy the luxury of our premier Safari Tent, equipped with all the modern conveniences you’ll need for a romantic getaway. Delight in a private clawfoot bath under the South Pacific stars and enjoy a champagne with your loved one. Complimentary bubbles on arrival for all our Ariki Tent guests.
